India captain MS Dhoni won the toss and elected to bat first in the second ODI against England at Kochi.
India has lost openers Gautam Gambhir (8) and Ajinkya Rahane (4) within the first five overs in the second ODI against England at Kochi.
Virat Kohli and Yuvraj Singh are slowly trying to steady the Indian innings after the fall of the two openers. Yuvraj struck an elegant boundary to the deep point fence off Jade Dernbach to cool some nerves.
Yuvraj Singh (32) was given out leg-before-wicket to spinner James Tredwell, although replays showed that the ball brushed against the southpaw’s gloves before hitting the pad. In the absence of the DRS, a disappoointed Yuvraj had to walk back to the pavillion. This was before Yuvraj and Kohli shared a 53-run stand to parry India through after the initial stutter.
India lost Virat Kohli (37) at the halfway stage after the Delhi batsman came down the track to Chris Woakes and tried smashing him over the cover boundary. However, Kohli could only find Ian Bell at deep point. Kohli looked livid at himself as he was dismissed yet again after making a good start.
Suresh Raina and MS Dhoni are steadily going about the middle overs as India progress at a run rate of 4.45. Raina is taking calculated risks, his 46 coming off 64, while Dhoni is his patient self. Suresh Raina reached his 26th ODI half-century as India took the batting powerplay. The left-hander got to the mark with a gentle dab down to the point boundary off Steven Finn as India looked to step on the gas.
MS Dhoni (72 off 66 balls) and Ravindra Jadeja (61 not out off 37 balls) hit 68 runs in the last five overs of the innings as they took India to a competent total. Nine boundaries and two sixes were shared by the pair in the last five as Dhoni’s helicopter came out. India will be more than happy with their revival after a nervous first half of the innings in which their batsmen threw away their wickets. England will find it hard to chase this total on the turning Kochi pitch.
MS Dhoni and Ravindra Jadeja both picked up India’s run rate in the death overs as Chris Woakes went for 26 runs in two overs. While Dhoni hit a six, Jadeja hit one too along with three fours off the medium pacer. Meanwhile, the Indian captain brought about the pair’s 50 partnership with a massive heave over long off in the 46th over bowled by Jade Dernbach. India would be targeting 260, which is a more than competitive total on this pitch.
England captain Alastair Cook struck two sublime boundaries to ease some pressure off his team after losing his opening partner early. Cook was joined by Kevin Pietersen at the crease and the duo will be looking to building a partnership to steady the innings.
Bhuvneshwar Kumar completed a terrific spell of 10-2-29-3 as Joe Root and Craig Kieswetter cautiously manoeuvred the Indian bowlers on a twisting and turning Kochi pitch. After Bhuvneshwar’s quota of overs was completed, skipper MS Dhoni shuffled his part-timers — Yuvraj Singh and Ravindra Jadeja — along with Ishant Sharma, who is not having his best day with the ball. There were plenty of loose deliveries from the lanky pacer which were dispatched to the boundary with ease.
Ravindra Jadeja followed up his batting heroics with the ball as England was pegged back to 133 for seven. Jadeja’s first victim was Joe Root who was bowled by the part-timer off a fantastic arm ball. Next man in Chris Woakes was trapped plumb in front of a nicely tossed up delivery.
