India lost wickets at regular intervals after a good start against West Indies on the second day of the first Test at Feroz Shah Kotla in New Delhi on Monday.
West Indies dismissed VVS Laxman (1) and Sachin Tendulkar (7) in quick succession as India continued to lose wickets in pair. Laxman became young Devendra Bishoo’s second victim as India were reduced to 120/4 from 89/0 inside ten overs.
The wait for 100th international hundred from the master continued when fast-bowler Fidel Edwards trapped Sachin leg before.
India also lost Virender Sehwag (55) and Gautam Gambhir (41) in quick succession after they gave the hosts a flying start against the visitors.
A fine stumping by Windies keeper Carlton Baugh off Devendra Bishoo brought an end to Sehwag’s marauding act after the Indian opener raced to his fifty in just 36 balls.
Sehwag smashed nine boundaries in his 46-ball blitzkrieg and added quick 89 runs with Gautam Gambhir (41) to provide India a flying start.
Gambhir was unlucky to get stranded at the non-striker’s end when a ball hit fiercely by his opening partner brushed Darren Sammy’s finger before hitting the stumps. The left-hander played an aggressive run-a-ball innings of 41 runs with the help of seven boundaries.
India raced to fifty in just 52 balls soon after the lunch break as the openers dealt mostly on boundaries to accumulate the runs after they survived a tough half-an-hour to come out unscathed against Windies pacers to end comfortably on 39/0 at lunch.
Earlier, Pragyan Ojha took his maiden five-wicket haul to bundle out West Indies for 304 in their first innings. Indian spinners came out on top as Ojha and Ravichandran Ashwin shared nine of the ten West Indies wickets.
Ojha finished with a career-best figure of six for 72 runs in 34.2 overs.
Debutant spinner Ashwin started his career on the right note as he took three Windies wickets for 81 runs in 27 overs. Whereas, pacer Ishant Sharma accounted for the all important wicket of centurion Shivnarine Chanderpaul (118) to trigger the visitors collapse.
Chanderpaul managed to add just seven runs to his overnight score of 111 before he was trapped lbw by the lanky Delhi pacer. The left-hand bat hit a couple of sixes and seven boundaries in his 196-ball brilliant knock.
Ojha wrapped up the Windies innings by taking Fidel Edwards wicket as visitors managed to add just 48 runs to their overnight total.
Ojha took two wickets in his consecutive overs to complete his first five-for in Test cricket as he dismissed Windies skipper Darren Sammy (5) and Carlton Baugh (27) and put a break on West Indies innings.
Both Sammy and Baugh were trapped leg before by the left-arm spinner in the morning session of the day. Baugh added 69 runs for the sixth wicket with centurion Chanderpaul as they continue to lead the Windies innings.
West Indies started their first innings on the second day with experienced batsman Shivnarine Chanderpaul and Baugh on the crease after the visitors scored 256/5 on the opening day.
